A fragile glass couldn’t help but break

linedandunlined:

Philosophy Bites interviews philosopher Helen Beebee on The Laws of Nature and Beebee continually revisits the metaphor of a fragile glass throughout the interview as she builds this poetic line of thought:

When you say a glass is fragile, you’re saying something about how it’s going to behave in certain kinds of situations. If I say, “Oh be careful that glass is fragile,” you know that I’m telling you not to drop it on the floor, or to dry it very carefully, or whatever it is, because to be fragile is to be disposed to break in certain kinds of situations.

All The Food You Eat Is Why You’re Fat
But it’s not your fault. The human brain isn’t very good at not eating as much food as possible. So when companies give you so much food, you’re going to gorge yourself. Time for some lessons in proper portions.

China’s first experimental space laboratory was successfully lifted into orbit from the spaceport in Jiuquan at 9:16am EDT this morning.

Yrd. Doç. Dr. Fikri Salman, parça kumaşlar üzerine çeşitli bölgelere ait kadın başlıkları örneklerini içeren 15 adet batik resim yaparken, Zeynep Atmaca ise, mandal, selpak, plastik tabak ve bardak, örgü şişleri, elektrik kablosu, bulaşık singeri gibi, çeşitli atık malzemelerden 21 adet şapka üretti.

Kültür ve Gösteri Merkezi’ndeki serginin açılışını Atatürk Üniversitesi Rektörü Prof. Dr. Hikmet Koçak, Erzurum Vali Yardımcısı Özgür Arslan ve Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi Dekanı Prof. Dr. Reşat Karcıoğlu ile birlikte yaptı.

Rektör Koçak, serginin, evsel atıkların yeniden kullanılmasının mümkün olduğunu gösteren, çevreci bir anlayışla hazırlanmış, ilginç, sanatsal bir çalışma olduğunu belirtti.

Sergi hafta sonuna kadar açık kalacak.

We’ve eaten an unacceptable amount of birthday cake today. It’s not even our birthday, we’re just celebrating the birth of this new week. For those with reason and self control, we have an alternative way for you to celebrate— a brand spanking new, fresh edition of This Week In Vimeo! Let’s set it off!

This week we’d like to bring your attention to Xavier Ruffin. Xavier was at the Vimeo Festival + Awards last year and sat down to chat with us. He’s a filmmaker from Milwaukee who shoots a lot of behind the scenes videos for various hip hop artists. Watch the video above to see what he’s got to say about his experience on Vimeo and then go check out some of his videos!

Sometimes we wake up and wonder to ourselves what everybody in Australia is doing. What’s poppin’ off in Japan? What’s the haps in Norway? Wamp wamp what it do in Peru? Well, you know what? We don’t think you want us imagining exactly what it is you’re all up to. You’re better off just showing us. Re-discover one of the oldest Vimeo memes: Me Right Now. The point behind a “me right now” video is to simply make a video about whatever it is you’re doing and show the world. Watch some of the videos people have posted in the past and then join the group and add your own!

This weekend we made an iTunes playlist called “Lost in the Woods”. It consists of just one song right now, so if we ever get lost in the woods we hope it’s only for 5 minutes and 53 seconds. Maybe we’ll just stay home instead and watch some videos on the Friends Of Trees Channel. 240 awesome videos from the depths of the wilderness. There’s some really great stuff in here and there’s no risk of being eaten by a mountain lion (unless of course you’re watching these videos within the vicinity of a mountain lion).

And if you don’t know, now you know.
